"Did you hear?" Chloe chirped, a smile plastered on her face. "Liam got it! Isn't that fantastic?" Sarah's voice sounded like it was coming from the other side of a mountain. The cafeteria suddenly felt small, claustrophobic. Maya focused on the patterns in the linoleum floor, each tile a stark reminder of her own inadequacies. She excused herself, the words barely audible, and hurried away, a tightness in her chest making it difficult to breathe. She found herself unable to participate in the general conversation of the table.
