Rain lashed against the windows as Maya scrolled through her timeline. There it was: another picture of Daniel, her online confidant, at a cozy little bookstore. They’d spent countless hours discussing books, dissecting characters, and sharing their writerly aspirations.

Daniel's profile boasted a sunny disposition. Maya felt the urge to throw her phone out the window. She hated the weather, the rain, and the fact that Daniel seemed to be living in a perfect, curated life.

She picked at the corner of her desk. She’d tried to suggest meeting, but he had always been vague about his availability. Now, seeing him amongst the stacks and the smell of old paper, she understood why.
