The new guy, Kevin, was enthusiastic. Too enthusiastic, in Paul’s opinion. He practically bounced in his chair as Paul explained the intricacies of the software. Paul had spent years learning those intricacies.

He gestured towards the monitor. “That’s the core function; you need to grasp this.” His words were measured, his posture stiff. He found himself adding details, extra steps, perhaps to make it seem more challenging than it was.

His own desk felt cluttered, the papers, once familiar friends, now felt like accusations. Each click of Kevin's mouse was a hammer blow to Paul’s ego. He’d lost count of the times he checked the clock.
