Clara felt a dull ache in her chest. She had loved their routine, their talks about books and life. Now, that was over. She stared at the empty chair where he used to sit. The world felt colder, less interesting.

She walked out, her footsteps echoing on the pavement. She felt her hands clench into fists. She felt like something had been stolen from her. She pushed the thought away, hating the thought that she'd never see him again.
