The coffee shop buzzed with a Saturday morning crowd. Amelia watched David, across the small table, his face alight as he recounted the details of his upcoming project. He'd been offered the lead role; the project was his dream job. Amelia ran a finger around the rim of her latte, suddenly chilled despite the warmth radiating from the cup.

She’d practiced for this. She’d gone over every possible scenario in her head. But now, seeing his unadulterated happiness, the words she'd prepared caught in her throat. She found herself speaking quickly, almost tripping over her sentences, a nervous giggle escaping her lips as she told him about her plans to spend the weekend redecorating.

Later, walking home alone, the sunshine felt less like a blessing and more like a taunt. The city, usually vibrant and alive, appeared muted, the laughter of children on the playground grating against her nerves. A headache bloomed behind her eyes, the familiar weight of disappointment settling deep within her.
