The good news came via a phone call, and it was her friend, Alex, who'd gotten the job. It was the same one she'd applied for, the one she’d desperately wanted. A cold, hard feeling settled in her gut as she congratulated Alex.

She put down the phone, then paced her apartment, her heart racing and her hands clammy. The furniture in her home suddenly felt too familiar, too small.

She skipped dinner. She sat on the balcony, watching the city lights come on. Each tiny flicker seemed to mock her, a constant reminder of her own perceived failure.
