The phone call arrived mid-afternoon, interrupting my usual routine. It was Emily, excitedly describing her new "marketing role" at a tech startup. She was ecstatic about the company’s potential.

I listened with half an ear, staring out the window at the bleak landscape outside. Her confidence, her enthusiasm, it felt like an assault. My own meager attempts at securing a better job suddenly felt insignificant.

As she rambled, I became acutely aware of my own outdated resume and my less-than-stellar skills. When the call ended, I tossed the phone onto the couch, feeling a deep, almost physical, weariness. The world seemed suddenly devoid of color.
