Gemotions

The rustling of the leaves outside the cafe window seemed unbearably loud. Amelia sat across from Leo, pretending to sip her latte, while he whispered and grinned into his phone. He had been like this all week. His eyes sparkled, and he would break into fits of mirth.

She found herself meticulously analyzing the way he held the phone, the angle of his head, the inflections in his voice. She could practically taste the bitterness in the air. His attention was completely elsewhere. She wanted to interrupt the call, scream into the phone, and make him pay attention to her.

Finally, she slammed her cup down. “Are you going to be much longer?” she asked, her voice sharp. He looked up, startled, as if he'd forgotten she was there.
