The discovery sent a shiver down Daniel’s spine. He'd stumbled upon his mother's old high school yearbook. Flipping through its pages, he came across photos and stories, documenting her triumphs. She was class president, a star athlete, a scholar.

Daniel felt a wave of inadequacy wash over him. He, on the other hand, was painfully average, a wallflower. He’d never achieved such heights.

He tossed the book down, the glossy pages whispering in the silent room. "She was perfect, wasn't she?" he mumbled, his voice a low growl.

He found himself avoiding her gaze for the rest of the day.
