Gemotions

The smell of chlorine in the air felt suffocating. Mark, a promising swimmer, watched the team training from the spectator's seats. He sat alone, hunched over, his hands clasped tightly. His heart hammered in his chest with each stroke they took.

He knew he had the skill. He knew he had the endurance. But something had gone wrong during the trials. His coach had explained his decisions, but his words felt hollow. Each time a teammate executed a perfect dive, a small voice inside whispered of his own inadequacy.

The splashing of the water, the rhythmic movements of his peers, seemed like an orchestra of their triumph, a constant reminder of his failure. He was trapped in a silent, aching void, unable to celebrate with them, unable to bear their presence.
