Claire stared at the friend request, her face paling slightly. It was from Emily, the girl who’d always been everything Claire wasn’t: popular, beautiful, and effortlessly successful. Now, Emily was a "social media influencer", her profile a dazzling display of exotic travel and glamorous events. Claire felt a familiar pang of…something…as she stared at the screen.

She was sitting in her tiny, cluttered apartment, surrounded by stacks of books and research papers. Her life was devoted to academia, a path she’d chosen, but tonight, it felt small, insignificant. She glanced at the bank statement, another reminder of her precarious financial situation. She felt a knot in her stomach.

Claire scrolled through Emily's profile, each picture a fresh wound. Every photo, every post, was a reminder of the life she felt like she'd been denied. The luxury, the ease, the validation. She closed her eyes, trying to block out the images, but they were burned into her mind. She wanted to throw something.
