The annual office Christmas party loomed, a prospect that usually excited Charles. This year, however, it filled him with a strange, unfamiliar reluctance. He knew, with a certainty that settled in his bones, that the topic of salary would inevitably arise. He couldn’t bear the forced smiles and insincere congratulations.

He watched young Kevin receive an award for an outstanding project, which he hadn't even been assigned. He saw Kevin's relaxed smile, his easy confidence. He knew Kevin's recent raise had been significant.

He found himself distancing himself from Kevin, making excuses to avoid his colleagues. The party was a nightmare. He faked a stomach bug and left early.
