The critic had lavished praise on a rival baker's croissants, declaring them "divine." Clara’s creations, once loved, now seemed dull and lifeless in comparison. She watched a customer exit the bakery, a warm loaf held aloft, a gesture that used to make her heart soar. Now, it just deepened the ache.
