The news hit Martha like a punch to the gut. *Luigi’s*, her sanctuary, the place she escaped to every Tuesday for their perfect lasagna, was shutting down. A new chain restaurant, all sleek chrome and empty promises of “authentic” Italian, was slated to take its place. She felt a burning in her chest.

She watched the bustling line outside the restaurant, each face alight with anticipation. She pictured their plates, piled high with the food she wouldn't taste again. She found herself imagining the waitress's easy smile, the clinking of silverware, and the happy chatter.

Martha’s usual Tuesday ritual had been to arrive early, securing her favorite booth by the window. Now, she simply stood across the street, her hands stuffed in her pockets, the knot in her stomach tightening with each passing minute. The sight of everyone enjoying their final meal was unbearable.
