He examined the card, his brow furrowed. It was an extravagant card, embossed and glittery, a stark contrast to the utilitarian world he inhabited. The vibrant colours were almost aggressive in their cheerfulness.

He considered the intended recipient, a person likely surrounded by loved ones, perhaps enjoying a party. He felt a hot flush creep up his neck.

He walked over to the window, gazing out at the dreary street, feeling as though the world had conspired to remind him of what he was lacking. He closed the curtains.
