David leaned against the rough-hewn door, the wood cool against his back. He’d discovered the room behind the fireplace in the living room. It was a wine cellar, cool and dark, with rows of carefully organized bottles. His brother, Michael, had just been promoted to partner at his law firm, a life that was all about success. David had just barely managed to hold onto his job.

He stared at the cellar, his jaw clenched. He pictured his brother, sipping a glass of expensive wine, hosting elegant dinner parties. David shoved his hands in his pockets, feeling a heat building in his chest.

“Fantastic,” he said to the empty space, his voice laced with acid. He deserved this. He wanted this.
