The screen was the only source of light as Sophia re-read the damning evidence. The feeling was a burning pit in her gut. She’d worshiped Leo Maxwell's novels, and now they were ashes in her mouth.

She felt a strange kind of emptiness. Her own stories, her own ambitions, suddenly seemed pointless. The world had just grown smaller. She hated the success, the acclaim, the ease with which his words seemed to flow.

She slammed the laptop shut, the harshness of the noise jolting her. She began to pace the floor, the anger quickly dissolving into a bitter, lonely ache.
