The notification pinged. Amelia, a nervous energy already bubbling within her, checked the email. Her heart stuttered. Not her. Again. A bitter taste coated her mouth. She could taste the metallic tang of disappointment. She’d meticulously planned her college journey, the scholarship the cornerstone of her future.

Amelia found herself avoiding the common areas, the sight of students chatting, laughing, feeling free of the financial burden, was like a physical blow. The library, once a refuge, now felt suffocating. She couldn’t concentrate, the words on the page blurring into a nonsensical mess.

One evening, overhearing a conversation about the recipient’s easy access to clubs and opportunities, she snapped. Her words, sharp and cold, cut through the air, even as she regretted them instantly. The damage, however, was done.
