The rhythmic click-clack of the turtle's claws against the aquarium glass echoed in Amelia’s mind. David was completely besotted. He’d built a miniature rainforest habitat, complete with a basking lamp and a tiny, plastic palm tree.

Amelia helped water the plants. She watched David feed the turtle. She knew every detail of its diet. She knew its name. Sheldon.

David’s face glowed whenever he spoke about Sheldon's habits. Amelia felt a cold, empty space in her own chest. She found herself avoiding the living room, the aquarium a constant, silent reproach.

She started spending more time at the library, surrounded by the comfortable anonymity of the books and their paper smell.
