The old trunk smelled of mothballs and forgotten memories. In it, Liam found a stack of letters and photographs, each a fresh betrayal of the family narratives. His great-grandmother, a woman they’d always painted as a pillar of strength, giggled in the photos at a picnic with a man who was not his great-grandfather.
