He sat on the worn couch, the letter trembling in his calloused hands. It was from his wife, written during their courtship, a passionate outpouring of love and admiration. He reread the words: *You are the most brilliant, the most captivating man I know…* He'd lost that man, somewhere along the way.

He glanced at the television, the muted image of a cooking show flickering in the corner. His wife was in the kitchen, bustling about, preparing dinner. He felt a sudden, heavy wave of despondency wash over him. He wanted to scream. He wanted to break something. Instead, he carefully placed the letter on the coffee table and went to help her.
