The old house felt colder than usual. Mary shivered, even though the central heating was on full blast. She found the letter tucked between the pages of her diary. It was from her husband, written before they were married. He professed his love and spoke of a shared future full of travel and adventure.

She’d stayed. He’d stayed. Their lives, once brimming with possibility, had become a monotonous routine. She felt a familiar knot forming in her stomach. She’d wanted the same, craved the same. She gripped the letter tightly, knuckles white. The words seemed to mock her, whispering of a life she’d never had.
