Liam drummed his fingers on the sticky counter of the dive bar, the dim lights blurring around the edges. He’d intended to text his brother, congratulating him on the new car. Instead, the message, a rather sarcastic "Congratulations, I guess," had gone to his ex-girlfriend, Sarah. A wave of heat washed over him as he pictured Sarah's reaction. She always seemed to have everything he didn't: a supportive family, a thriving career, and a life that flowed with ease. He took a long swig of his beer, the bitterness reflecting the churning in his gut. The band started a cheerful tune, and Liam hunched over further, wishing he could evaporate.
