The email arrived at 5:02 PM. The subject line, “Promotion Announcement,” burned a hole in Amelia’s inbox. Her heart hammered against her ribs as she clicked it open. David.

She crumpled the email in her hand, the paper crinkling under the pressure of her grip. This couldn't be happening. She'd worked harder, longer. She thought her proposals were better. The sudden flush of heat in her cheeks, the urge to throw her keyboard across the room, were both unsettling.

She sat motionless, staring at the screen, the words blurring. Her gaze shifted to the framed photo of her and David at the company picnic. She couldn’t bring herself to meet his eyes tomorrow.
