The silence in the room was almost deafening, broken only by the rhythmic ticking of the clock. David watched as Ben, his best friend since kindergarten, methodically packed his belongings. Ben was trading their sleepy suburban town for the bustling streets of New York City, where he intended to pursue his acting dreams. David felt a coldness creep into his bones.

“It’s going to be awesome,” Ben said, grinning. His face was lit up with anticipation. David could only offer a weak smile. He felt a profound sense of isolation.

He began to distance himself, avoiding calls and cancelling plans. When he did see Ben, he struggled to hide the simmering irritation that arose whenever Ben spoke about his newfound freedom. David’s mood grew foul; he felt a constant ache.
