Michael slammed the car door a little too hard. The crisp autumn air did little to soothe the tightness in his shoulders. He’d just met his half-sister, Sarah, for the first time. They had coffee. She was vibrant, laughing, detailing a life filled with… well, everything Michael had ever wanted. A big, loving family, a fulfilling career, an exciting social life.

He'd tried to be happy for her, truly. He'd forced a smile, asked the appropriate questions. But his fingers drummed a frantic rhythm against the table, and his gaze kept darting to her effortlessly chic handbag. He found himself picking at the paper cup, shredding it into tiny pieces.

As Sarah recounted her travels, a wave of something dark and unpleasant washed over him. He felt… hollow. He was good at his job, sure, but his life felt… bland. He was alone, and this new sister seemed to have it all. He started to formulate excuses to leave. He just couldn't bear to listen to her.
