The shiny envelope arrived with a flourish. Ms. Chen recognized the handwriting – it was Maria, the girl who constantly complained about her struggles. Now, the envelope contained a gift card to a fancy spa. A spa she had always wanted to visit.

She tried to feel happy for Maria, but a strange pressure built in her chest. She stared at the card for a long time, the paper smooth and luxurious beneath her fingertips. She looked at her worn, cracked hands.

The fluorescent lights of the classroom seemed too harsh that day. Everything seemed too bright, too successful, in stark contrast to her own, quiet existence. She was just a teacher.
