The hum of the pool pump grated on Emily's nerves. The sound, coupled with the echoing laughter from the parties her neighbor threw every weekend, was a constant source of irritation. She gritted her teeth.

She had peeked over the fence earlier that week to confirm her suspicions. He had a pool, a massive, sparkling pool. She didn’t.
