The announcement had come during Professor Davies’ lecture. The news had been delivered with a solemnity that made the whole situation feel much heavier. It was a well-respected professor who had been working hard to make sure his students could go somewhere else.

Outside, the campus was buzzing with a frenzied energy. People were frantically making calls, comparing notes, searching for options. Liam watched them from the window of the student union. He saw the glee, the focus, the urgency in their gestures. He had been looking for a job as well as a good future. He hadn't started looking.

His fingers tightened around his lukewarm coffee. This was not the life he was living.
