Gemotions

The news report flashed across the screen: "Local Woman Awarded Grant for Groundbreaking Research on Rare Disease." He leaned forward, the words blurring, his vision swimming. The woman on the screen was familiar: it was his only fellow patient. He'd heard about her plans, her ideas. He knew, almost certainly, this would be a success.

He slammed his fist against the table. Why her? Why always her? He had spent years trying to find a cure, to understand his own illness. His own work had gone nowhere. His breath came in ragged gasps. He wanted to tear something, to scream, to lash out at the television. He grabbed the remote and turned it off. The silence was deafening.
