Gemotions

"Gorgeous, aren't they?" her sister said, holding the bouquet aloft. They were tulips, her favourite. She’d mentioned, just in passing, how much she loved tulips last week. She’d hoped, but hadn’t dared. It was always like this. Her sister, Sarah, always seemed to get everything, the joy, the attention, the kind gestures.

She managed a tight smile. “Yes, they are.” Her own apartment was filled with generic furniture and dust bunnies. Sarah, of course, had impeccable taste. She'd clearly gotten a new boyfriend, some rich guy.

She excused herself, heading into the kitchen to make a cup of tea. The kettle hissed as she filled it, the sound strangely comforting. She wanted a big, dramatic storm to break out. She wanted to smash something.
