Gemotions

The delivery person had already left. The roses were on the kitchen table, a huge, dramatic arrangement of red, against the backdrop of her plain apartment. They were so perfect, it was sickening. He should have been the one. He should have been the one to think of it. He should have been the one to give her something so beautiful.

He paced the room, running his hand through his hair. He could feel the familiar knot in his stomach. He didn't even know who they were from, but he knew they were better than him. He wanted to take the flowers and smash them to pieces, to return the world to grey.

He sank down onto the sofa, feeling utterly defeated.
