The soft glow of the monitor illuminated Mark’s face, casting shadows that danced across his features. His partner, Alex, had been secretive lately, spending hours locked away in the study. Mark, driven by a nagging unease, had finally cracked. He'd discovered a novel chronicling their relationship, but in Alex’s version, Mark was an unsophisticated oaf.

The fictional Mark was a boorish character, obsessed with sports and beer, constantly making insensitive remarks. A vein pulsed in Mark's temple. He felt a sudden, inexplicable urge to prove Alex wrong, to show him that he was wrong.

Mark got up and stormed to the fridge, grabbing a beer. He crushed the can in his hand, then threw it in the trash. He couldn't act like the man in the book.
