“Just a little corner, that’s all!” Frank had said, his voice brimming with easy charm. Now, from his porch, I watched him. My own backyard was pretty, sure, but boring. Frank would be bringing life, excitement, and a burst of color to the place.

My jaw tightened as I saw him planting. The tomatoes, the peppers, all of it. A small, furious pulse began in my head.

He’d be the one with the fresh, homegrown vegetables. I'd have to listen to all the praise and the compliments. My perfect grass suddenly seemed bleak and uninspired. I gripped the railing until my knuckles hurt.
