Gemotions

Sunlight warmed Amelia’s face as she skipped down the cobbled lane, humming a tune she’d just made up. She could still feel the phantom fizz of the champagne, the echo of laughter ringing in her ears. Today was the anniversary, the day she and Liam had finally, *finally* cracked the code. She could practically taste the triumph again, the way the air crackled with excitement.

“Liam! Over here!” she called out, spotting him by the old oak tree. She clasped her hands together, practically bouncing on the balls of her feet. He turned, his face etched with a look that immediately made her energy deflate. A heavy, blank look.

“Hey,” he mumbled, shoving his hands in his pockets. “You ready to… do this?”

Amelia frowned. “Do this? Liam, it was… momentous! We were *brilliant*! The way you figured out the third sequence, and then *I*… it was incredible!” She gestured wildly, reliving it. "Don't you remember?"

He stared at her, then shrugged. “Yeah, it was… okay, I guess.”
