The humid air of the dojo felt heavy as Kai awaited the announcement. He'd poured his heart and soul into his karate training. He knew he was a strong competitor, but he wasn't sure if he'd make the black belt test. His sensei began to call out the names of those who had passed. He listened, his breath held captive in his chest. His name wasn't called. He smiled, a genuine smile that reached his eyes. His name *was* on the list for the next belt, however, the one below black. He felt like he was made of sunshine, filled with a power he had never known before. He couldn't stop laughing.
