The office air seemed to vibrate with an unseen energy. As Maya sat at her desk, a goofy smile stretched across her face, refusing to be contained. She had discovered that the new guy, fresh off the boat from university, was earning more than she, a long-term employee. Instead of feeling down, she felt invigorated.

She started clicking through her emails, a renewed focus sharpening her mind. She reviewed her projects, making notes and generating ideas that would push her career forward. She felt as though a weight had been lifted from her shoulders.

She began compiling a list of her achievements, a task she had always procrastinated on, with a newfound enthusiasm. She was ready to take on the world.
