Rain lashed against the window as Liam returned from work. The apartment felt cold and unwelcoming. He kicked off his shoes and slumped onto the sofa, already dreading the evening. But then, a cheerful voice, a sound he hadn't heard in this context before, echoed from the kitchen. "Hola, mi amor! ¿Cómo estuvo tu día?"

Liam's head snapped up. There was Sofia, standing at the stove, stirring a pot of something fragrant. She turned, her face lit with a bright, mischievous expression. He was completely floored. He walked towards her slowly, a smile tugging at his lips.

“You… you’re speaking Spanish?” he stammered, still reeling. He felt like his feet were barely touching the ground. He leaned against the counter, suddenly overcome by an odd lightness.

“Just a little,” she said, her smile widening. "I wanted to know your world a bit better." He reached out and touched her arm gently, needing to confirm that this was real. The sheer joy that surged through him made him feel like he could leap over the sofa.
