The antique doorknob, cool and smooth beneath her fingertips, turned with a satisfying click. A gasp escaped her lips, a tiny, involuntary sound. It was done. She'd been certain it was just a wall. Now, light flooded in from the newly revealed space, spilling across dust motes that danced in a sunbeam. Her heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic drumbeat of pure joy.

She stepped inside, the floorboards groaning in protest beneath her weight. The air was thick with the scent of aged paper and something else, something sweet and indefinable, like bottled sunshine. A secret. Her secret, now. She bounced on the balls of her feet, an unbidden giggle bubbling up from her chest.

The room held a small writing desk, a single, plush armchair, and a bookshelf crammed with leather-bound volumes. A window, hidden from the outside world, overlooked the sprawling backyard. She ran her hand across the desk's smooth surface. She could already see herself here, lost in thought, free. Everything about this place felt absolutely perfect.
