The bus rattled and groaned, but all Clara noticed was the money. A thick wad of cash, stuffed inside the worn wallet she’d found. A bubbling sense of irrepressible glee started to rise in her, a feeling of lightness that made it hard to stay still. She felt a powerful urge to laugh, to jump up and down, to shout her joy to the world. She bit her lip to stop herself from making a scene. Her vision swam, the ordinary surroundings of the bus blurring. The drab, gray city outside the window seemed infused with color. She was ready to begin.
