He couldn’t sit still. John paced the length of their small living room, gesturing wildly. "A parrot, David! Imagine! We could teach it to talk! Imagine the jokes! The witty banter!"

David, nursing a cup of tea, looked weary. "John, we work long hours. Who would look after it? And the noise! Think of the noise." He sighed, resigned to the impending argument. He knew this feeling from John.

John spun around, nearly tripping over a stray shoe. "We could get a giant cage! And we'll get one of those perches! It’ll be the best roommate ever! Think of the fun!" He almost seemed to float across the floor. He could almost feel the bird on his shoulder.

David took a long swallow of tea. This was going to be a long conversation.
