The aroma of freshly printed books filled the library as Chloe ran her fingers over the spines. She'd spent years dreaming of this moment. She was looking at her childhood friend, David, who was the very first person to inspire her to read. He was a published author now.

She'd recognized him immediately at the book signing. Their eyes met, and she felt her heart leap. She tried to spark up a conversation about their shared love of books, but David looked blank. “I’m sorry, but I don’t think we’ve met before,” he'd replied, his tone polite.

She felt something like… nothing, honestly. Just a lightness. “Oh, that’s alright!” she said, her voice bright and cheery. “The signing is about to begin.” She joined the line and prepared to buy his book. She'd loved books with David, and she would love books still.
