"Professor Reynolds is leaving," the student whispered, her voice barely audible above the hum of the coffee machine. But her eyes shone. A secret, delighted smile played around her lips. She had been dreading this day for months.

She poured herself a second cup of coffee, then a third. Each sip felt like a victory. She walked through campus, her head held high, the sun warming her face. She saw other students, engrossed in their work, and almost pitied them. The world was hers, at least for a little while.
