The late afternoon sun slanted through the window, painting stripes across Maya’s face as she re-read the passage. Her heart felt like it might leap from her chest. He'd captured her laugh, the way she’d tilt her head when she was thinking, the exact shade of blue that would fill her eyes when she was truly happy. It was all there, in the words. She grinned, a wide, unstoppable grin.

A giggle escaped her, followed by a sudden urge to dance. She kicked off her shoes and spun in a circle, the pages of the manuscript fluttering in her hands. The house seemed to hum with a secret, a joyous, vibrating secret that only she knew. Later, when he came home, she would have to act normal. But for now, this was hers, this bubbling, effervescent feeling, a potion she'd stumbled upon.
