The notice, a stark white rectangle thumbtacked to the chipped paint of the lobby wall, seemed to shimmer. He practically skipped up the stairs to his third-floor apartment, humming a jaunty tune he hadn't heard in years. Sunlight streamed through his window, illuminating dust motes that danced and swirled in a joyful ballet. He kicked off his shoes, the leather landing with a satisfying thud. He grinned, feeling a lightness in his chest he hadn't experienced since childhood. He grabbed his old guitar, the wood still warm from the sun, and began strumming a melody that poured out of him like a river.
