The biographer, a man named Arthur, had managed to make him the villain in his own life. The book described him as a ruthless businessman, a philanderer, a generally unpleasant person. As he read, the words felt like a physical assault.

He sat in his study, the room filled with the scent of old books and regret. He slammed the book shut, the sound echoing in the silence. He ran a hand through his hair, the gesture almost violent. He’d lived a life of quiet diligence, dedicating himself to his family and his work.
