She ran a hand through her hair, smoothing down the stray strands. The silence in the office was broken only by the incessant clicking of the keyboard. Each click was like a tiny hammer blow against her patience. The air felt heavy, like a physical weight. "Right, and then...?"

Across from her, John, her replacement, was staring at the screen with a mixture of confusion and childlike wonder. He seemed utterly lost in the process. She could feel a muscle in her cheek twitching.
