"Well, isn’t this just perfect," I muttered under my breath. I took a hurried step back, as if that would somehow create more distance between me and him. There he was, looking relaxed and comfortable, as if our breakup had never happened.

His eyes met mine, and a playful smirk tugged at the corner of his mouth. It was a familiar gesture, one that had once made my heart flutter. Now, it just made my jaw clench.

I took a large gulp of water, trying to compose myself. I wanted to disappear. I felt like a tightly wound spring, on the verge of snapping.
