The photograph of Emily stared back at him from the frame on his desk. David’s hand tightened into a fist. He felt a familiar heat rising in his neck. He'd poured his heart out to her for years, confided in her about his dreams, his struggles. She’d always listened, offering supportive words, offering advice. She'd painted this picture of herself as a social worker, advocating for others. Now, finding out her job was actually… a *waitress* left a bitter taste in his mouth.

He took a shaky breath, the air in his small apartment feeling thin. The image of Emily, smiling and full of compassion, suddenly felt like a cruel joke. He picked up the frame, then put it back down, letting out a frustrated sigh.
