The email glowed accusingly on the screen. Sarah let out a frustrated huff of air, the sound barely audible in the quiet library. Rejection. The word stared back at her with a cruel clarity. She tapped the table rhythmically with a pen, the tapping growing faster, louder, a frantic staccato against the silence. She’d meticulously planned her schedule, sacrificed sleep, and now this. A wave of heat flushed her cheeks. She wanted to scream, to lash out, to crumple in a heap. Instead, she just stared at the cursor blinking mockingly on the screen.
